Lived Experience

Personal Stories from Individuals Dealing with Precarious Employment

Our Stories

This section of our website houses some personal stories of those who have lived experience dealing with precarious employment in the London area. These stories come from the interviews that were conducted in the process of making The New Normal, and are presented here in a written format to help deepen our understanding of the situation at hand.

We've included these stories of lived experience in the hope that we can challenge the way that we collectively see and think about poverty. There is often a tendency to think of poverty as something visible, like homelessness or unemployment. While this visible poverty is real and important, we also want to illustrate that poverty can look like many other things, and sometimes it can be almost invisible. There are people with jobs and with homes who still worry about putting food on the table, or who can't afford to meet their medical needs. While this type of poverty can be harder to see, it's all around us, and it needs to be acknowledged. We hope these stories demonstrate that precarious employment, and the uncertainty that comes with it, can affect anyone.

We also want this process of exploring precarious employment to be an open dialogue, and we strive to keep the perspectives of those with lived experience central to the discussion every step of the way. Our "Share your Story" page is open for anyone who wants to contribute to the conversation, particularly those with lived experience themselves, so that the voices of those with personal experience continue to be central forces in what we do.
